In September 2010, the UNESCO Section of Policies for Culture initiated the project “Linking Culture, Education and Sustainability: Good Practices and Experiences from Around the World” which aims to collect, analyze and share successful education and learning initiatives that articulate strong links between cultural, socio-economic and environmental aspects of sustainability.
The examples of good practices selected from around the world were selected by their characteristics of illustrating how Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue can work synergistically.
The objectives of creating such a platform, as stated by the UNESCO, are to:
- Collect, analyze and disseminate examples of “good practices” which demonstrate how Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue can be part and parcel of ESD
- Engage individuals and organizations in becoming part of a global network for culture, dialogue and sustainability.
- Raise awareness and spark interest about the potential links between Cultural Diversity, Intercultural Dialogue and ESD.
- Inform and inspire future policy and programming to help bridge links between cultural, socio-economic and environmental learning for sustainability.
According to a declaration by UNESCO released along with the announcement of the selection of the projects, the projects were chosen because of the learning potential they offer to those who are at the start of their journey.
MELCA’s SEGNI Program has been selected as one of those few examples of good practice chosen for the learning potential it offers to school children in relation to nature and culture.
This Project promotes the role and value of indigenous knowledge, traditional practices and lifestyles in achieving sustainability in Ethiopian communities. The Project uses an intergenerational learning approach to engage students in schools in understanding their own cultural background, respect the traditional values and practices of their communities, and become change agents for Bio-cultural diversity and sustainability.
