A Glorious Day in Sheka

for front pageThe road to Masha, the town of Sheka Zone in the Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR), has been busy for a couple of days during the end of January 2013. Many people from Addis Ababa, Hawassa, the capital of SNNPR, and zones neighboring with Sheka were traveling to the small town of Sheka Zone to attend an occasion to be celebrated on the 28th of January 2013.

PHE

This is an initiative intended to provide population, health and environment related services to local communities in an integrated manner. And the core objective of the initiative is to let the communities and service providers have an understanding of the interrelationship among these three social services and act accordingly.

To this effect, support of mini-media materials would be provided to schools so that students participating in SEGNI and Health (HIV/AIDS) clubs actively engage in awareness creation programs for their school and the community. Capacity building training on the integration of the components is also provided to health, agriculture and environment agents working at Kebele level. Religious leaders are also involved in spreading the initiative in the communities.

The Coffee Dilemma: A story from Sheka

The Coffee Dilemma:

A story from Sheka

By Million Belay (PhD), Director of MELCA-Ethiopia

I just had a coffee in one of the coffee houses, in a little container, in Masha, Sheka. Containers houses are famous here in Ethiopia both for their mobility and sturdiness. Just over a three year ago there were only two containers selling coffee. Now you can count over two dozen.

Proceedings of National Workshops on Seed Issues, Ecological Agriculture and Related laws

proceedingcoverIn 2011, MELCA-Ethiopia has organized three distinct workshops on the subject of Generic Seed Issues, Ecological Agriculture and Related Laws in Ethiopia for three supposedly influential stakeholders in the subject matter. These are parliamentarians, agricultural researchers and media people. The workshops were organized based on the recommendation forwarded on a seed workshop organized for other stakeholders in 2010. The sensitization workshops on Generic Seed Issues, Ecological Agriculture and Related Laws were organized for media people, parliamentarians and agricultural researchers on Sept. 2, 2011, Dec. 14, 2011 and Dec. 16-17, 2011 respectively.
